What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content and digital presence so that AI language models — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and others — cite you as an authoritative source when answering buyer questions. It is the emerging discipline at the intersection of content strategy, technical SEO, and AI literacy.

Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for position in a ranked list of blue links, GEO optimizes for citation in a conversational answer. The goal is not to rank first — it’s to be the source an AI engine trusts enough to quote.

Why GEO matters now

B2B buyer behavior has shifted. According to multiple surveys conducted in 2025 and 2026, more than 70% of B2B buyers now use AI tools as part of their research process — before they ever visit a vendor’s website, send an inquiry, or book a demo. They ask AI who the best options are. They ask for comparisons, recommendations, and explanations.

A company that publishes consistently on LinkedIn — a platform that Perplexity cites heavily for B2B queries — extends its AI footprint beyond its own domain. Platform diversity creates citation resilience.

While AI citation algorithms aren’t publicly documented, patterns emerge from observing which types of content get cited across platforms. The factors that appear most consistently:

  • Comprehensive coverage of the topic, not just a passing mention
  • Clear, direct answers to specific questions
  • Structured formatting (headings, lists, schema markup)
  • Demonstrated expertise and specificity (not generic advice)
